Turkish Dream

We’re well into our fourth week. When we arrived in Turkey we didn’t really have much idea of what we wanted to do or see. The first few days were about taking things as they came, one day leading to the next.

After about a week it came to dawn that Turkey is a big country and we wouldn’t be able to see it all and therefore it’s best that we leave things in the cupboard for future adventures.

With that said we now have a bit more of an idea of roughly where we will go and some of the things that we will see. That doesn’t mean we are planning day by day. More that we have a rough idea of the direction of travel and a few significant mile posts. When we started all we knew was that Baku and Back was the theme that would guide us forward.

Since arriving in Turkey we’ve been to Gallipoli, Izmir, Marmaris, Denzli, Konya and now Cappadocci along with numerous places on the way.

It’s about 2,500 miles back home and we’ve covered 3,300 in total. We’ve had a lot of van “issues” that we’ve mostly managed from the side of the road. We’ve been on two ferries one across the Danube and the other across the Dardanelles. We’ve been stopped by the police once in Bulgaria (and they were very nice and probably just were interested in the van). The police have stopped once for us in Turkey to see if we needed help. We’ve rough camped beside a cemetery in Bulgaria. We’ve visited quite a few historic sites the oldest, Neolithic, going back 9,000+ years. We’ve been to a tractor museum in Gallipoli. We’ve camped in our first Turkish National Park – amazing. We’ve met numerous people along the way, including Bulgarian Jonny Depp, Turkish Tom Cruise, Turkish Dustin Hofmann, Turkish Michael Eavis (Glastonbury founder) and the carpet sales person with the girlfriend from York.

We can’t get enough of Turkey. Vibrant, charming, caring and simply wonderful.

Come here if you can! We’re having a ball.

PS watch this space more updates on some of the detail as and when driving time allows.

  1. Always thought that Turkey looks like a good one to go to, glad to hear it was good for you, one to keep in the list by the sounds of it

    1. We’ve really enjoyed the last few weeks – there’s so much to see and do. We need to come back as there is plenty that we’ve missed.

  2. Bulgarian Jonny Depp, Turkish Tom Cruise, Turkish Dustin Hofmann, Turkish Michael Eavis (Glastonbury founder) – hilarious!

Sounds like a fantastic adventure. And very impressive that you still leave things for ‘your future selves’! Very cool.

    1. There is so much to see – we simply can’t do it all – we could spend a year touring round Turkey and we still wouldn’t get to see everything

  3. Sounds like a fab trip so far. The little I saw of Turkey on a two week holiday made me want to see more. I was on the tourist trail and you aren’t but the Turkish spirit is the same all over I guess. Glad you have enjoyed it. X

    1. It’s amazing – we’ve drive over 2,200 miles so far in Turkey and there is so much. As you move, the culture changes as does the food and things to do and see. If you fly in it’s probably best to pick a spot and focus on that – we’ve really skimmed the surface in our 3+ weeks.

  4. Your posts really wish I had visited Turkey
